Upheld: A Widow’s Story of Love, Grief, and the Constancy of God
If you have never read anything of Christine Farenhorst’s writings, you need to! She has a storytelling way with words that is quite unique: a meditative, thoughtful meander through word meadows which leave you wondering.
Most of what she has written is historical – whether historical biography or historical fiction, but this book is different.
Upheld is a compilation of Christine’s thoughts following the death of her husband of nearly 53 years. Each chapter is a short reflection on an aspect of their life together, headed by a Scripture text and linking to Biblical truth. This is a window into the very real grief of losing a life partner – the ruminations of the grieving mind are not ordered chronologically, and at times they might seem to be interrupted by inexpressible emotion, but always they are anchored by Scripture. Occasionally you can almost feel as if you are intruding into the usually hidden depths of an intensely personal experience, like sneaking a look into someone’s private diary. But then the next chapter will bring a smile as Christine recounts an anecdote with humour and candour, not skirting over failures and mistakes. The love certainly shines through, so does the three-fold cord that bound this blessed marriage.
This book will really speak to the heart of anyone mourning a similar loss and gives a helpful insight to anyone seeking to support them.
