Seven Words – Revealing the Mystery of the Cross by Hugh M. Cartwright, published by Ettrick Press (2023).
Taking each of the sacred utterances of the Saviour as He suffered, the Just for the unjust, Hugh Cartwright expounds the doctrinal and experiential truths which flow from ‘the preaching of the cross’.
As in his other works, the savour of Christ, a zeal for His honour and a deep love of the gospel for sinners pervades the sermons. It is a pleasure to warmly recommend these sermons. His simple exposition of deep truths makes pleasant and profitable reading for those who love the same precious doctrines that he loved to proclaim. His exposition of the first words of the Saviour on the cross are particularly helpful, dealing ably with the question of sins of ignorance, and rightly dividing the Word of truth concerning those for whom Christ prayed and those for whom He did not.
It was a great loss to the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland and to the wider church of Christ when Hugh Cartwright was taken to his eternal rest, but those of us who loved the Lord’s servant while he was yet with us, will find that ‘he being dead yet speaketh’ through these pages. May the Lord bless the reading of them to many.
