Newly published from Christian Focus Publications is Geoffrey Chang’s examination of C H Spurgeon’s Reformed ecclesiology and Baptist polity… here is an excerpt from the conclusion:
More than a century has passed since his death, and yet Spurgeon remains remarkably relevant for modern-day pastors and church leaders. Much attention has been given to Spurgeon over the years as a preacher, evangelist, rhetorician, author, social activist, controversialist, philanthropist, and, in more recent days, theologian. But it must not be forgotten that most fundamentally, Spurgeon was a local church pastor. To say it another way, his pastorate was not the backdrop but the foundation that made all his other ministries possible. Moreover, his theological understanding and commitment to the local church undergirded his pastoral ministry. In a day when so much confusion exists about the local church, Spurgeon can serve as a helpful guide for pastors and church leaders in several ways.
First, Spurgeon provides a model for convictional ecclesiology and polity in a megachurch context. In an age where pragmatism and aesthetics so often drive decisions about church structure, the use of technology, the approach to corporate worship, and other aspects of church life, Spurgeon provides a bracing example of someone who was committed to following God’s Word, not only when it came to the gospel, but also the church…
Second, Spurgeon provides a model for long-term, church-based ministry… Undoubtedly, Spurgeon’s fruitfulness and his congregation’s participation in his vision were, in large part, a result of his long-term ministry in the church. Additionally, even as his ministry and influence grew, Spurgeon’s ministries also remained rooted in the local church…
Finally, Spurgeon’s emphasis on the militant church provides a reminder to pastors of the church’s context and mission… The goal of the militant church is not the world’s approval, but faithfulness to our Captain’s orders and mission, whatever the cost.
