A wonderful historical novel set against the background of the Boer War in South Africa in which love, pathos and loyalty are interwoven. Louis Wessels from a well established Afrikaner Boer family in the Transvaal is betrothed to Truida, a Boer living in the British colony of Natal and educated in an English school. When war breaks out the two lovers are confronted by more than a political conflict – loyalty to separate causes pulls at them. How can these two hearts, beating strongly for each other, be reconciled? On which side is justice to be found? The Boers believe God is on their side, but the English claim sovereignty and demand compliance from the South African colonies. Will the Boer prayer for a free, united nation ever be realised? Will love prevail over Louis and Truida’s struggle, or be shattered?
