For nearly 40 years at the end of the nineteenth century James Dennett (1828 – 1900) was pastor at Salem Strict Baptist Chapel, Frederick Street, Birmingham. During this period he was also editor of the Gospel Standard from 1884 to 1891. The contents of this booklet is made up of two articles from Dennett’s pen which appeared in the Gospel Standard in 1885. He here shows that the law promulgated at Mount Sinai could not give life. In fact, as he says, “The work of the law is to show that no life comes from it.” Furthermore, Dennett, like the Apostle Paul before him, demonstrates the difference and distinction between the two covenants; of works, and of grace.
