James Hervey (1713-1758) was born at Hardingstone, near Northampton. He was ordained in 1736, and had curacies near Basingstoke and at Bideford, before his poor health forced him home in 1743. This is Dialogue 10 from Theron and Aspasio, a book written in the style of a friendly argument between two friends of these names. They discuss the important doctrine of Christ’s Imputed Righteousness. This was Hervey’s last work on the theme, and handled with the earnestness of a man on the verge of eternity. Nevertheless he was harshly criticised by John Wesley for his pains.
