It is a small handbook of doctrine, life and experience, long out of print, yet William Romaine thought it ‘a most proper book for a journey – it is so well divided: chapters so short, and yet very experimental.’ Thomas Chalmers, leader of the Free Church of Scotland, also wrote a highly appreciative foreword to a 1829 edition in which he praised its ‘plain and practical’ style in addition to its handling of the ‘essential truths of the gospel’ and the ‘operative nature of these truths, as inwardly experienced by the believer, in the formation of the spiritual life … and character.’ It has been republished in a quality hardback edition.
