Anne de Vries was a Dutch school teacher and popular novelist. After the Second World War he was commissioned to capture in literary form the spirit and agony of those five harrowing years of Nazi occupation. The result was this book which was published in four volumes from 1951 – 1958. It became a bestseller and was subsequently translated into English. It has been reprinted in one volume in paperback in this edition.
