There is a striking contrast between two seceders from the Church of England in the first half of the 19th Century namely J C Philpot and J H Newman. This address by Matthew Hyde concentrates on the apostasy of J H Newman, and his descent into the Church of Rome. It is a timely account of a sad history, for with the proposed visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the UK later this year there is much talk of him beatifying Newman. However here Dr Hyde shows that there was little blessed or beautiful in the life of Newman, but whilst he was in the Church of England only much deception. He was a poor deluded soul. In his description of the papacy in II Thessalonians 2 Paul declares in verse 11 “And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”
