A traditional but well written appreciation of Calvin, from a decidedly Protestant stance. Interestingly the author quotes many Roman Catholic writers to show their grudging acknowledgement of Calvin’s influence. The effect of his teaching upon England is emphasized. There is also a useful chapter giving an outline of Calvin’s famous ‘Institutes’. Underlying the biography is a concern that educationalists and historians are writing off the Reformation as a mistake – and this book was written a century ago!
