Claimed to be the first substantial biography on the life of James Montgomery (1771-1854), the author of the well-known hymn ‘Hail to the Lord’s Anointed!’ He was born in Scotland and educated by evangelical Moravians in Yorkshire. Montgomery spent many years in Sheffield making known the gospel of grace and supporting many Christian causes. He was a literary figure of some stature, the editor of a newspaper, and the author of numerous hymns.
