Robert Hawker’s Select Works. In 1794 Robert Hawker founded a charitable hospital in Plymouth called the ‘Misericordia’. It particularly supported soldiers and their families. His sympathy extended, of course, also to the souls of these people. Springing from this came the idea for this book – to write to those in misery of heart. It is as if he ministers the gospel at the bedside.
