John M’Kenzie was co-editor with J C Philpot of the Gospel Standard from 1836-1849, and it was in this latter year that M’Kenzie died. Although he contributed a number of written articles to the infant magazine (it had only commenced publication in August 1835) he was principally a preacher. He served as pastor of the Particular Baptist Church at Preston, Lancashire from 1836, and just previous to his death he had become pastor of the Particular Baptist Church at Byrom Street, Liverpool. Upon hearing him preach on one occasion in London, his co-editor wrote, “I once heard him at Eden Street with that melting savour and power that I have scarely ever felt under preaching either before or since. …That was an experimental sermon, and came home to my heart with a sweetness and savour that I cannot describe.” This booklet is the substance of a sermon preached in 1842 on Ephesians 1 v13 & 14. It shows M’Kenzie to be a master in Israel, as he carefully and faithfully differentiates between true and false faith.
