Matthew Welland (1818-1908) was the much loved pastor of Jireh Chapel, Lewes, East Sussex, for nearly 50 years. He regularly preached to nearly 1000 people each Sunday. Greatly loved by his congregation, he had a warm pastor’s heart wowards them. This volume brings together a new biography of Welland, together with his previously unpublished pastoral diaries, and a selection of his sermons. It provides a profound insight into the life and exercise of a pastor. It is a significant contribution to the history of the Calvinistic Independent group of churches in the late 19th Century.
