On August 1st, 1835, a new little magazine of 24 pages, costing twopence, was issued from an obscure printing works in Manchester. Demand for it increased rapidy and in less than 40 years over 17,000 were appearing each month. It was called the Gospel Standard, because it was intended ‘as a standard (banner) unfurled for the gospel.’ This new edition of the history of what is believed to be the longest-running Christian monthly magazine is published to mark the 175th anniversary of its commencement. It has been updated where needed and a new chapter added by G D Buss about the current, and longest-serving, editor, B A Ramsbottom.
