A Christian at 22 years of age, J C Ryle went on in later life to become the first Bishop of Liverpool. Loved and looked up to by the children in his congregation he took their teaching and spiritual lives very seriously. Children will enjoy reading these stories but this is also an interesting and intriguing book for any involved with children at home or at church. Ryle’s stories open a window on a different era. They show how children were taught the truths of the Bible then and still can be today. J C Ryle encourages us to teach the whole of Scripture and not just parts of it. In a century that has neglected the teaching of children it is good to look back to a time when children’s work and teaching was at the forefront of the church’s mind and heart. Read to me 7-8 years and read myself 9-12 years.
